“an adventure in historic Lihue Plantation”

Hop in a four-wheel-drive adventure vehicle and traverse former Lihue Plantation lands deep into Kauai’s pristine emerald green interior. Enjoy breathtaking vistas and spectacular scenery, while your guide shares information about our island. When you arrive at our launch site you’ll grab a tube, don a headlamp, and jump in the gently flowing waters. Witness Kauai's spectacular, historical engineering feats as you float down the open canals, through several amazing tunnels and flumes engineered and hand dug circa 1870. Enjoy the wonder and magic of each tunnel, lit by headlamps. At the end of your adventure, you will be guided to an enchanted picnic area nearby, for a delicious lunch and a cool dip in a natural swimming hole. Kauai Backcountry Adventures has exclusive access to the historic irrigation system of the former Lihue Plantation. This ditch and tunnel system that once irrigated vast sugar crops had been unused since sugar was taken out of production in 2000. In January 2003, Kauai Backcountry opened a section for exclusive tubing tours. This water system runs through some of the most beautiful and remote land on the island. It includes spectacular views of the ocean, coastline, mountains and valleys. The waters which originate near the top of Mount Waialeale, one of the wettest spots in the world, are channeled through ditches and tunnels hand-dug by plantation workers over a century ago! The Mountain Tubing Adventure is perfect for all those age 5 and over, and in generally good physical condition. The gently flowing waters, beautiful scenery, flumes and tunnels are combined for a relaxing, fun and fascinating experience. And when we say we are unique, we mean it! This is the only tubing activity of this type on Kauai. And we are the only eco-tour company with access to these 17,000 acres of former plantation lands. If you want to get off the beaten track, don’t miss Kauai Backcountry’s exclusive zipline and tubing tours. From start to finish, they will take you on amazing, fun-filled journeys that you will never forget.

We did this several years ago and it goes through 2 small mountains, all hand dug. Amazing and water was cold, but we were there in January.

Tubing the canals on Kauai's former sugar plantations is a fun excursion that almost anyone can do, even the kids. The journey includes floating through several caves, thus the reason for the helmets with headlights. One of my favorite things to do on Kauai.
