Historic Treasure

Our Take

Michigan’s only island can only be reached by boat, but Mackinac (pronounced Mack-in-awe) has history, shopping, dining, and scenery in spades. It can be done as a day trip, but if you stay for a weekend, you can book a room at the famed Grand Hotel and give yourself plenty of time to check out the Revolutionary War-era Fort Mackinac, as well as the rest of the island. Things move at a slower pace here, partially because cars are banned from the island, so bikes, walking, and horse-drawn carriages are the main modes of transportation. It all adds to the Victorian charm. Also, Mackinac is famous for its fudge, so don’t leave without visiting a candy shop or three.

Awesome place to visit if you're up in Northern Michigan. It's just a short ferry ride away the island is so picturesque in the summertime. I haven't been since I was a kid but it's just sort of a classic summer escape, complete with horse-drawn carriages and salt-water taffy. I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the fall as well. Definitely go have a drink at the Grand Hotel and sit out on the porch, it lives up to its name.

Worth a day trip at the very least! Roadtrippers doesn't seem to have anything in terms of restaurants, bars, popular spots, etc. on their maps but my two favorite places to eat/drink are the Yankee Rebel Tavern for the Michigan beer selection and Island Inn for the food. There are some great, easy to hike/ride trails with even better views all around the island. The $25/adult roundtrip ferry tickets will be worth it!
