“the playground of the hip”
In an effort to establish a town on San Diego's waterfront, San Franciscan William Heath Davis begins developing land near what is now the foot of Market Street. For his own family, Davis builds a pre-framed lumber "salt box" house, one of the first residences in town. The Oldest surviving structure in San Diego's New Town was actually built on the East Coast and shipped around Cape Horn. After an economic depression causes Davis' venture to fail, his town becomes known as Rabbitville after its principal inhabitants. The Gaslamp Quarter has successfully transformed into a premier shopping, dining and entertainment district. With over 200 restaurants, bars, nightclubs and lounges, and countless boutiques, art galleries and shops to peruse, the Gaslamp has established itself both as the playground of hip, eclectic San Diegans and as an elite urban destination.
Great night-life, plenty of bars and clubs. A little pricy, most weekend nights places charge a cover. Some dress codes don't allow for hats and/or require a collard shirt. Just look up where you want to go before hand. Maloneys has a dollar drink night on well drinks on Thursdays for with a ten dollar cover. Not a bad way to go.
Gaslamp is one of my favorite downtown areas in the US! Most places charge a cover but that is to be expected. Great nightlife, great weather, huge variety of spots to choose from, huge variety of people going out from college kids on up. An awesome place to start your night is a piano bar called "The Shout House." If you are planning on going out hard in Gaslamp make sure to stay somewhere downtown. We had to go back to La Jolla and ended up spending over $50 on a cab back up.
