Whether you’re newly married or empty nesters, purchasing an RV as a couple is an exciting step toward exploring the outdoors and new adventures together. Important Features to Look for in RVs for Couples
When there are two people involved in the purchasing decision, you have to be open to compromise. You and your partner will need to agree on a price range, type of rig (motorhome or trailer), tow vehicle, and how you’ll be using the RV. Keep in mind that you’ll be sharing the workload when it comes to tasks like parking, going to the dump station, towing, and leveling your camper, so do your research and choose wisely—some rigs are easier to drive and maneuver than others.
Sleeping Arrangements
With the amount of floor plan options on the market, sleeping arrangements vary greatly from rig to rig. You can either purchase an RV that fits just the two of you, or one that has additional space for guests. RV bed types range from sofa sleepers and murphy beds to king-sized beds, so make sure you’re getting the type of bed that’s comfortable for you. Floor plans will also vary—are you looking for a closed-off bedroom space or an open layout?
Storage
If you’re planning to spend a lot of time in your rig or RV full time, make sure you have ample storage space. Just keep in mind the amount of cargo you’ll be carrying, especially if you’ll be towing your trailer, and don’t overload it.
Bathroom
It’s perfectly normal to be picky about your bathroom situation (and it’s also fine if you don’t care), but if you’re going to be spending plenty of nights in your rig, some separation might be welcome. Think about whether you want a fully functioning bathroom, or if you’re okay with a cassette toilet or outdoor shower. If you’re looking for a more standard bathroom, you’ll need to decide between a dry or wet bath, meaning a separate shower and toilet, or one where the shower doesn’t have a separate enclosure.
Living Space
Similar to deciding on an apartment or house, think about what type of division you want in your living space. If one (or both) of you will be working from the RV, an open layout might not be the best option. And since you’ll be spending a lot of your time outdoors, consider a rig with an awning or an outdoor kitchen to create additional functional space.

The four-wheel drive Revel is one of the best adventure campers for couples to hit the market. A Note on Rig Specs
It’s incredibly important to pay close attention to specs when shopping for a travel trailer. Use the VIN (vehicle identification number) to find the towing capacity and payload capacity for your specific tow vehicle.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
The maximum loaded weight of your trailer as determined by the manufacturer. You should never exceed this weight rating when your RV is stocked with all of your gear, propane, and fresh water.
GCWR (Gross Combination Weight Rating)
The maximum weight of both the vehicle and trailer, plus the passengers and cargo in both.
UVR (Unloaded Vehicle Rating)
The weight of your trailer as manufactured with no cargo, propane, or water. This is often referred to as “dry weight.”
CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)
This is the difference between your UVR and your GVWR, telling you how much weight you can safely add to your trailer. Pay close attention to the cargo carrying capacity if you intend to travel with a lot of gear.
Tongue Weight
This is the amount of weight pressing down on the hitch ball that is attached to your tow vehicle. It is extremely important to make sure that the tongue weight of a travel trailer does not exceed your tow vehicle’s payload capacity.
