‘Het Kinderkookkafé’ which means ‘kids’ kitchen café’ was started in 1981. This is ‘the place’ where children cook for, and serve guests. The idea is that the children do the cooking and are responsible for the meal, depending on their age of course.
In November 2004 we moved to this wonderful location in the Vondelpark. Before that, For 23 years, we occupied a unique position on the Oudezijds Achterburgwal in the heart of Amsterdam. Here, in our new building, we have double the space plus a big outdoor seating area and we are connected to an ‘after school care’ centre.
In Het Kinderkookkafé, the children do the tasks that are usually done by adults. They fetch their own drinks or cakes and cookies. They collect the ingredients and utensils themselves, they put everything away and they clean up afterwards. So, the children do the cooking, bar-keeping, serving, writing menu’s, clearing up (and a bit of washing-up) and sometimes they even do the checkout.
The children cook for themselves and for their guests. During the day they can take from the help-yourself bar but also during (birthday) parties, lessons, or the communal dining-table.
