“Enter at your own risk”

The Abbey Caves are completely undeveloped and unguided. Entry is at your own risk.Only experienced cavers should enter underground, as there are risks from rapidly rising water and roof falls. The Organ Cave entrance is dangerous due to a roof fall.

The climb down at the mouth of the caves should be the most difficult part of the journey. Mostly it is firm level footing in ankle to thigh deep water. The Organ Cave is the largest of the caves and is easy going to the 50ft high cavern. You will see large overhanging stalactites which look similar to church organ pipes and a “starry night of glow worms”. In the Organ Cave you must enter and exit from the same point.

The Middle Cave and Ivy Cave are smaller and it is possible to enter and exit at different points. Middle Cave is the shortest with a slightly tricky climb out at the end. Ivy Cave has a short section of low ceiling after 60metres and you will see graffiti from the 1800s . In the last 15 metres of the journey the water gets deeper and the base is mud however, it is an easy climb out. All of the caves have thousands of glow worms.
