“display the world’s largest collection of aviation and space artifacts”

The Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia is our companion facility to the Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Opened in 2003, its two huge hangars — the Boeing Aviation Hangar and the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar — display thousands of aviation and space artifacts, including a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, a Concorde, and the space shuttle Discovery. The Center also offers the Airbus IMAX® Theater and the Donald D. Engen Observation Tower, which gives you a 360-degree bird's-eye view of Washington Dulles International Airport and the surrounding area. Udvar-Hazy Center is also home to the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar where preservation of the National Air and Space Museum's collections takes place. A glassed-in mezzanine provides a view of restoration projects in progress. Researchers will also find the majority of the things to do while visiting the Udvar-Hazy Center. We offer daily tours and educational activities for both children and adults. We also have scheduled lectures and events throughout the year.

Free admission but $15 parking. Aircraft is impressive, but probably more fun for anyone interested in a related field of study. Read more

We went with family and everyone loved it. The space shuttle Discovery was there. Also a display on how the SR-71 Blackbird was turned into Jet Fire on Transformers. It was great to see the Enola Gay completed and the Global Flyer (having watched it take off for its solo nonstop airplane flight around the world). Read more

If you like planes this is a must visit. So much to see... SR-71 Blackbird, a Concorde, space shuttle Discovery, Enola Gay, helicopters, space/flight suits, etc. So much great stuff to look at. There is also an IMAX theater, a couple simulators rides, and an observation tower where you can see planes take off and land at Dulles Airport right next door. Admission to the museum is free, but parking is $15 per car (as of 2015). Read more

Love this better than the one in DC. It's less crowded, and it's a great place to visit with friends and family from out of town. It's family friendly with separate rooms for changing baby's diaper. I do wish there was a cafe other than the giant McDonald's, but I'm guessing there is some sort of agreement since McD's is a major funder. Read more
