Natural Wonder

Our Take

This is a gorgeous waterfall on the enchantingly-named Looking Glass Creek. It is truly nature's slip-and-slide waterfall! The water is pretty cold even in the summer, but it's sure to give you a rush of adrenaline as you slide down and plunge into the crisp water below. It’s open Memorial Day weekend to mid-late October, so plan accordingly.

“A waterfall you can slide down!”

Sliding Rock is a waterfall in Western North Carolina, located near Brevard, so named because visitors can slide all the way down the waterfall into the plunge pool below. Sliding Rock is a rock and small slide-type waterfall on Looking Glass Creek, in the Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard, North Carolina. It has a gentle slope and is about 60 feet long, ending in a large, deep pool at the bottom. The rock has long been used as a natural water slide for adventurous tourists and locals. The water is very cold and is popular for cooling off in the summer. The area has been developed by the US Forest Service into a popular recreation area. Parking is available in a large lot above the rock and beside U.S. Highway 276. There are two viewing platforms, steps down to the pool and railings to help climb the rocks on the left side before sliding down. Sliding down is required in a sitting position only.  A restroom and changing room is provided and a lifeguard is periodically on duty especially during summer weekends. At other times, sliding down the waterfall is done at a visitor's own risk. Children must be of a certain size to slide alone, otherwise, they may slide in the lap of an adult. A $2.00 per person fee is charged by the Forest Service to use the area between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, ONLY when lifeguards and rangers are on duty. The rock is closed to sliders during times of high water or when lightning is detected in the area. To get to the recreation area and the falls, travel north from the intersection of U.S. Highway 276, approximately 7.7 miles north of the intersection of 276, U.S. Highway 64, and NC Highway 280 in Brevard, North Carolina. En route, you will pass Looking Glass Falls and the parking area for Moore Cove Falls. Though there is a parking lot available, if you make a visit to the park during the busy season, the lot will likely be full, and, occasionally, there will be a long line to get into the lot. Therefore, a savvy traveler would be wise to either get to the park early or later in the day.

We went of 4th of July - their busiest day of the year. The line went VERY quickly, so don't be intimidated by it if it looks long. There are changing rooms, bathrooms, and lifeguards. The slide is easy and nothing to be afraid of. Lots of little kids and older people going down. Water is clean. We didn't wear water shoes and were totally fine. Easy to control yourself going down. Tons of fun and a wonderful stop on a hot day!

I was here when I was about 10 years old, I'm 62 now! It was so fun. It wasn't crowded at all and there were no rails or lifeguards. The rocks were probably rougher back then too! LOL.
Right after we were there they filmed an episode of Lassie there!

Lived in Asheville for 12 years and visited almost every summer. It can get pretty busy and a little slippery waiting in line. Wear water shoes and get ready for an awesome natural slide!

Go after 6 when the staff leaves for the day, less crowded and the $3 per person entry fee is avoided

I first went when I was 12 and again last year being 22 and I still laughed my butt off and screamed while being submerged. The water is so incredibly cold, but very much worth it on a hot, sunny day. Wear water shoes. If you go down 4 people at a time you will get stuck and everyone will cheer for you. It's awesome.

Higher, faster, rougher and colder than we expected but a fun and exciting experience. Not for little kids. Make sure to wear shorts or pants. I wonder why they don't do tubes?

Absolutely amazing! I felt like a little kid! I had a blast! :)

Pet friendly! But I am a solo traveler! And I wanted to slide! So I brought the fur baby with me for a little bit, then took her back to the car so I could slide! There were lines but went pretty quickly! And it was worth the wait! The water was pretty chilly! But absolutely exhilarating! If the parking lot is full, wait a little bit, or try to park in one of the pull off spots!

Lots of fun. Wear your water shoes so you can control your slide better. Taking the back road up is really fun too, lots of scenic views. And be prepared the pool at the bottom is COLD!
