“the grandest plantation ever built in Marengo”

Gaineswood is a plantation house in Demopolis, Alabama. The house was completed on the eve of the American Civil War after a construction period of almost twenty years. It is the grandest plantation house ever built in Marengo County and is one of the most significant remaining examples of Greek Revival Architecture in Alabama. The house and grounds are currently operated by the Alabama Historical Commission as a historic house museum. Gaineswood is on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The estate is owned by the state of Alabama and is administered by the Alabama Historical Commission. Severe moisture damage to the ceiling and dome in the dining room was corrected under a Save America's Treasures grant. The Whitfield family has donated or sold much of the original family furniture and some statuary to the Historical Commission to be used in the house. The Burning of the Eliza Battle, painted by Nathan B. Whitfield, still hangs at Gaineswood. He was a witness to the steamboat disaster in 1858. Beware- it's rumored to be haunted!

Thoroughly enjoyed our tour. Worth stopping if you have the time. Absolutely beautiful home and story behind it. Allow an hour for the tour.

Our tour was fantastic. Our tour guide, Kathy, was helpful and informative and the architecture was amazing. The paintings were extremely interesting to look at and we’re hand painted by him. There are many artifacts original to the house. The house itself is beautiful and the gift shop has some cute ornaments and T-shirts. We were here for about two hours. Well worth the time and highly recommend!

We toured the Gaineswood Plantation on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016. We were fortunate to have a delightful tour guide and historian that provided us with many historical facts about the house and the family who build it. If you are interested in beautiful old historic homes, this is a must see. We spent about 2 hours and thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope it will always be preserved for our Southern history.
