“a Gothic architectural treasure”

Louisiana's Old State Capitol, a Gothic architectural treasure, stands high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River in downtown Baton Rouge. Today, the building stands as a testament to bold, inspired leadership and active citizenship. In 1847, Baton Rouge lured Louisiana's capital away from the city of New Orleans with the donation of a plot of land high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Architect Jame The Capitol around 1890s Harrison Dakin (1806-1852), a New York native with a thriving practice in New Orleans, was retained to design the new capitol building.

Located in the heart of town and overlooking the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge’s Old State Capitol is one of the United States’ most beautiful Capitol buildings and your gateway to Louisiana history. The gothic-style statehouse is over 160 years old and was restored to its current form in 1994.

Doubling as the Museum of Political History, the State Capitol holds rotating exhibits focusing on everything from prominent figures of the past to art celebrating Louisiana’s landscape and diverse heritage.

We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Baton Rouge!

Gorgeous little building, worth it for the stained glass dome in the interior. The video about the history is also worth the watch if you have time.

Didn't really get to see much of it because of the ridiculous amount of construction around it.
