“A folk art tribute to African-Americans.”

Joe Mintner has collected and populated his yard with folk art since 1989. The theme: A tribute to African-Americans. Retired construction worker Joe Minter has created a spiritually inspired sculpture garden in his yard, built from objects he found or bought at flea markets, thrift shops and garage sales. (The Birmingham News / Frank Couch)There may be only one place in America to see the Scripture verse John 3:16 painted on a tailgate removed from a Dodge pickup truck, propped up against a fence next to a historic cemetery. It's the same place where giant red plastic letters from a defunct movie theater are nailed to a wooden fence, spelling out "His Word is Real."

I was really excited to visit this place since I have been to several folk art places in the country. However, I was extremely disappointed in this place. It seemed to be in the bad part of Birmingham and the road it was on was very sketchy, especially for 3 young white girls.... The "art" itself had no organization and was just trashy looking. The website said it had an open gate policy but all the gates had no trespassing signs on them. We didn't even stay 5 minutes. We also got ate up by mosquitos and the neighbor was just randomly singing in his yard the whole time staring at us... The whole ordeal was just uncomfortable. Don't waste your time going off the road for this one.

Very unusual place to visit. At first, I saw many junk/scraps scattered in the area and thinking "What is this place?". Then when I take a good look at the place and start my imagination that's when I knew that the place is full of sculpture/displays made from scrap. It was very interesting and it made my imagination go wide. It was a unique experience and nice place to visit.
