Historic Treasure

Our Take

Unlike most cliff dwelling sites, the Manitou Cliff Dwellings site allows you to climb in and explore, enabling you to imagine the lives of the Native Americas who lived here. You get to experience the spaces that were used for cooking, ceremonies, sleeping, and living, with replica artifacts in place. Something about interacting with history like this makes you feel like a kid again, sparking curiosity and imagination. It’s also more accessible than Mesa Verde National Park since the dwellings were actually moved to this location to preserve them.

This place is pet friendly and definitely a good spot for kids as well. The dwellings are open for climbing and exploring. Really interesting site to see. The negative I would say is that the parking lot is like 30 feet in front of the dwellings, making it impossible to get a great picture of the thing or to feel what it would've been like living there. It took me about 30 minutes to explore and sketch. I didn't visit the museum/gift shop because I had my dog with me.

I was very disappointed. To me it looked very fake. Every thing was perfect. I don't think it is perfectly perserved. I think it is rebuilt and maintained. It has a huge gift shop and concession area. It is and has been privately owned and it is for profit. It is not a state or federal site.

Very fun for families (just be aware that the gift shop is full of expensive breakables with any child's reach).

We enjoyed this stop quite a bit. It's not crazy big but you can explore and learn a lot. My 5 kids from 3 to 9 enjoyed it!

This is one of the smaller cliff dwellings I've visited. However, it is definitely the most preserved and extremely beautiful landscape. It is well worth a visit!

We had so much fun here! My 6 and 3 year old boys had so much fun exploring the cave dwellings, and my dog was very happy she could accompany us everywhere...even in the museum and gift shop! Everyone who worked there was super friendly, and the view was breath taking. Also, it's not far off the highway and easy to get to. Definitely a must see! Also a bonus...kids under seven are free!
