“over 65,000 artifacts on display”
“I make it clear why I write as I do and why other poets write as they do. After hundreds of experiments I decided to go my own way in style and see what would happen.” Carl Sandburg's free verse style of poetry, journalism, biography, children's stories, prose writing, and social activism provided a popular voice for the American people of the twentieth century.
The picture doesn't do this place justice. While the house is nice it's really the sprawling, beautiful grounds that make this place a great place for a Saturday walk.
Take a walk to see the goats. Take a long hike to see a beautiful view from the side of glassy mountain. Take a stroll around the lake. Tour Carl Sanburg's house and check out the bookstore. There is transportation available if you can't make it up the hill on foot and everything is free except for the house tour. Parking can be sticky on holidays and weekends during season. Really peaceful and beautiful place year round.
The Sandburg Home is beautiful, and it tells the story of one of America's greatest writers. My daughter loved seeing a house with that many books, along with musical instruments and board games, because that is what she thought a house should be. Mrs. Sandburg was known for her championship goats, the descendants of which are on the grounds today.
The Rangers do a great job of telling the story in an interactive manner. We were fortunate to be there on a cool winter weekday, so we got a tour to ourselves, which only enhanced the experience. Definitely worth the trip.
