These half-plant, half-animal organisms emit a flash of bluish light when agitated at night. The high concentration of these creatures (Pyrodimium bahamense) can create enough light to read a book from. The Puerto Rico Department of Environment and Natural Resources manages the Puerto Mosquito area of the Sun Bay Nature Reserve. There is a DNER regulation to help preserve the bay by prohibitting swimming in the water and for that reason our guests view the amazing glow aboard our electrically powered pontoon boat. Island Adventures Biobay Tours offers nightly excursions aboard our electrically powered double-pontoon boat through the amazing glowing waters of Puerto Mosquito in Vieques Island. This happens during the "Red Tide" in late summer in San Diego, Ca... It's less bright than this, but still within the ConUS.

We get this in Charleston, SC as well! Not as bright but very visible around tide pools where jellyfish gather. The organisms emit light like mini LEDs and jellyfish will light up like larger bulbs, amazing sight! Last I've seen it occurred on a particularly warm weekend in October.
Very awesome.. there are three different biobays around Puerto Rico, book a trip ahead of time and check the calendar before planning your trip, because it is harder to see the glow when the moon is full, so they don't do trips then.. I guess I got to go before the restriction was on because I got to swim around in it a bit, so cool! glittering all up and down your arms when you pull your arms out of the water! Definitely a must-see, dinner + drinks on the boat ride, awesome!
while sailing in the Whitsunday Islands off Australia these were in the water and I went to the toilet unaware and as I turned to flush they were in the water as I watched I moved and moon light came between my legs and I screamed blue murder thinking they had jumped out of the toilet and were after me hehe.Also came across them on the coast near Noosa near Brisbane in a lake that filled up on high tide during the night and was full of these green things as they couldn't escape till the next tide was amazing
It's one of the most amazing things we've seen in our lives and we go every time we're on the island. Our son lives on Vieques and we make at least one trip a year. I'd like to offer a couple of thoughts for consideration when visiting the bio-bay. 1) You can no longer get in the water when there in an effort to preserve the plankton and 2) Make sure you get as close to the darkest sky possible; the brighter the sky, the less you will see.
