“housing a collection of over 8,000 objects from multiple areas of the world”
As a teaching museum, Denison Museum engages in and supports learning and inquiry in the liberal arts. Cultural heritage materials, both borrowed and drawn from the University’s permanent collection serve as significant components in the University’s academic curriculum and form the basis of exhibitions and programs. Denison Museum is committed to caring for and managing its collection and resources for the benefit of a diverse audience that extends beyond students and faculty to include visitors and learners from around the world. The Denison Museum at Denison University houses collections that number over 8,000 objects from multiple areas of the world, but primarily derive from Asia, Europe, and North and Central America. A wide variety of media, including stone, wood, paper, lacquer, metal, ivory, and oils, is represented in the collection. The Denison University collection was established in 1943. The founder and chair of the Art Treasure Room, as it was then called, Edmund G. Burke requested alumni and friends of the University to donate a painting, a tapestry, a vase, an engraving, a watercolor, a choice piece of silver, or an article of antiquity to Denison. The collection was initially housed in the William Howard Doane Library, but as the collection expanded, additional space was required. The Burke Hall of Art and Music was constructed in 1973 to house a concert hall for the Music Department and a gallery and storage area for the permanent art collection. The building was designed by the architectural firm of Perkins and Will, and named after the main benefactor of the arts at Denison, Edmund G. Burke.
