Our Take

The Marin Headlands are great for hiking or just a scenic drive. There are plenty of nice windy roads, in addition to a scenic loop you can cruise. You’ll also find a variety of trails, including some day hikes and quick strolls. The two highlights here? The old WWII-era gun batteries you can climb around and the lesser-known views of the Golden Gate Bridge, away from the tourists. Bonus: If you know where to look, there’s also a Nike Missile Site you can see from afar if you’re into Cold War history.

Enjoy a hike through our varied trails, including dog-friendly Rodeo Beach, and take in the astonishing views of the Pacific Coast and San Francisco. The explosion of wildflowers in the spring and raptor migration in the fall fill the Headlands with year-round excitement. The Marin Headlands is an example of open spaces still available in the Bay Area for visitors to enjoy.

Don't miss the Point Bonita Lighthouse at the end of the peninsula of the Marin Headlands. The 1 mile trip out offers spectacular views of the Golden Gate from several angles (the natural beauty of the surrounding cliff sides can't be beat either).

One of the best views in the entire Bay Area (when the view is clear). Parking around is tough to find with all the tourists but is very much worth the view.

Also try coming here at night on a clear night to see the bridge lit up with the city skyline behind. Truly an exceptional view!
