Starting where the Oregon Trail crosses the Grande Ronde River, the Gold Rush Bike Route heads uphill through the Tony Vey Meadow and west and south over the most rugged portion of the Blue Mountains offered by paved road in northeast Oregon. Scenic forests and mountain grandeur abound on this route. Visit the gold rush town of Granite, see the Sumpter gold dredge and finally arrive in Baker City, home of the biggest gold nugget in the state of Oregon. This is a remote route with few services; bikers should be well prepared for this route due to the sparse services along the way. There are many accessible mountain streams along the way; so, a water filter can be very handy. Pack plenty of snacks and food; services are limited. This route contains numerous steep grades.
