“Former luxury in former Yugoslavia”
***This place is on private property. Listing for informational purposes only. Please do not visit without express permission from the land owner.*** Opened on the Adriatic island of Krk in 1972, the Penthouse Adriatic Club is named after owner Bob Guccione's other famed business venture -- Penthouse magazine. Staffed by beautiful women (the "Penthouse Pets"), the casino and club was a melding of capitalist currency and communist worker concepts to run a hot nightspot in the middle of the Cold War. Only one year later, the casino closed its doors. In that wintry economic climate, no one could keep the club above the water. The hotel remained in business until 1990, and then it followed the club into the realm of bankruptcy. Now, the hotel and club remain abandoned on the island of Krk, home to many urban exploration projects, and many graffiti'd masterpieces. The views of the Adriatic remain pristine and majestic, though the surrounding decayed Brutalist architecture makes it all the more bittersweet.
