"For about twenty years, I have lived in the small town of Summerville Georgia. In many ways it seems time has forgotten about this sleepy town. Change is something frowned upon and happens in the slowest blur of motion. Many towns have a tale. Many have a secret or something questionable in their history. In the decaying ruins that are known as Corpsewood Manor, whispers of such an account. In the beginning, Charles L. Scudder referred to his Manor as "A castle in the woods." He built his manor atop Taylors Ridge in Chattooga County, Georgia. Mr. Scudder, a retired professor and his companion built the small castle in the course of several years. It was unique in many ways beyond the stained glass window and the circular staircase. It had no electricity and no running water. They relied on their garden and made most things they needed for their daily life. Things were not as rosy as the Circular Rose Garden would have a town believe. Claims of homosexual pornography, LSD drug use, and Satanism now tarnish this place not soon forgotten. Many believe that even the ruins are evil and haunted. They fear looking upon or walking these once beautiful grounds. On December 12 1982, both Mr. Scudder and his companion Mr. Odom along with their Mastiff dogs met their deaths in this created paradise. The violent circumstances of their death involve accusations of drugs and robbery. After their deaths, it was reported that items for restraint and torture were found in a special room that has been referred to as "The Pink Room." This room was located above the chicken house and stated to have had a pleasure chamber and area that contained drugs and homosexual pornography. A pentagram rock also found on the grounds supports the accusations of their devil worship practices. This Manor House was looted and burned to the ground shortly after the violent deaths of Mr. Scudder and his lover Mr. Odom. Locals caution visitors about taking souvenirs because it is rumored that evil befalls all who do. There have been several unfortunate circumstances and bad occurrences blamed on the taking of a small token or brick from the site. Maybe, it is a coincidence. Many think it is something born of pure evil. The brave who visit these ruins claim that an uneasy feeling greets you as you walk the grounds. Statements have been made that it feels as if someone is watching while others claim to hear and see things they cannot explain. Some believe that the Satanic accusations are just that. That possibly, these men were of the Wicca faith. That perhaps, the people of our town are "small minded" in their views and these men were simply misunderstood. It is claimed by these few, that in our misunderstanding of this faith the accusations of Satanism were born. I think that at times it just seems too much for these select to believe. In a place where time still slumbers, it is an incredible tale. I have chosen not to walk the site that the inquisitive feel compelled to visit. For many, the curiosity of the unknown and questionable is too strong a draw. If evil does remain among the ruins may it stay in the burned confines of its woodland grave. Perhaps, it will grow weary and forgotten like the blur of passing time still evident in our sleepy town." - Layla Lair
