“the only emerald mine in the United States open to the public”

The Emerald Hollow Mine is the only emerald mine in the United States open to the public for prospecting. Nestled snugly in the foothills of the beautiful Brushy Mountains, this North Carolina Emerald mine is located in the small town of Hiddenite, North Carolina. This locality is recognized as one of the most unique and interesting geological locations on the North American continent. Host to more than sixty-three different types of naturally occurring gems and minerals, a virtual treasure trove of gemstones can be found at our gem mine! Many of these are very rare, including emerald, aquamarine, sapphire, garnet, topaz, amethyst, citrine, rutile, and tourmaline, along with an abundance of world class smoky and clear quartz crystals. Hiddenite is also famous as the only place on earth where the very rare gemstone "Hiddenite" can be found!

Awesome time and found lots of gems in the bucket provided with the mining permit. Just know they close about 30 mins before sunset. My kids have already asked to come back!

We had a bit of fun here. Just
bought a bucket to sift through in the troff. We wanted to go to the mine of in the creek, but they close at 6:30...not 8:00 as their website indicates (maybe call them ahead of time). We had a lot of fun and found some colorful gems to keep as roadtrip souveniers! Glad we stopped by!

I could spend so much money here. It was really fun digging for your own gems and the buckets were much better than I was expecting! I found some pretty great stuff, but beware! The people next to me found amazing stones and mine didn't nearly stack up; I got a little jealous I will admit. But definitely worth the trip!
