Hoyt Arboretum is a living laboratory where scientists and students can study trees and plants that would not otherwise grow in our climate and habitat. At Hoyt Arboretum every tree has a story to tell. Tree collections are organized by taxonomy (plant families) and geography. Identification labels help you to learn about trees that catch your interest. Founded in 1928 to conserve endangered species and educate the community, Hoyt Arboretum encompasses 187 ridge-top acres, accessible by over 12 miles of trails with connections to the Wildwood Trail in Forest Park. Although Hoyt Arboretum is relatively young, this living museum possesses the largest group of distinct species of any arboretum in the U.S. Its plant collection contains 10,000 individual trees and shrubs, representing nearly 1,000 different species from around the world.

Hoyt Arboretum is one of our essential 'get out of the house' walking spots in Portland. Its a large beautiful tree sanctuary right on the outskirts of Portland with miles of walking trails (both paved and unpaved)

A perfect place to get the dogs and kids out - hike through moss covered paths and see the thousands of varieties of trees. I think we ended hiking all of the12 miles of trails around the Arboretum. We loved the Redwood trail which takes you onto a platform to view the huge sequoias - and during the fall, the maple trail is incredible.

Definitely worth the trip if you are visiting - or a weekly hike if you live nearby!

Most of the trails are easy to walk and well marked for an easy return to the starting point. In the spring the cherry blossom trail is beautiful; in the fall the maple trail is amazing; in the summer you will enjoy the shade of the trails through the redwood, pine and fir forest. The views of the city are wonderful from a few of the overlook places. You can spend 45 minutes or all day exploring the area.

Hoyt Arboretum is a 185-acre living museum with a collection of over 8,000 trees and plants from around the world. The Arboretum's plantings and programs promote the understanding, appreciation and scientific study of a wide variety of specimens, many of which are rare or endangered. This tranquil setting with over 12 miles of hiking trails in Portland's urban environment is free to the public and available for everyone to enjoy.
