  1. Author Thomas Bailey Aldrich wrote an autobiography, “The Story of a Bad Boy” about his misadventures in Portsmouth which launched the :bad boy" literary genre.
  2. While serving in the navy, Humphrey Bogart was transporting a prisoner to the Portsmouth Naval Prison, and the prisoner attacked him, smashing his lip. The repair surgery was botched and Bogart was never able to fully repair the injury.
  3. The USS Albacore was a prototype submarine built at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and commissioned in 1953. At the time she was the fastest submarine ever designed.
  4. New Hampshire is the only state that ever played host at the formal conclusion of a foreign war. In 1905, Portsmouth was the scene of the treaty ending the Russo-Japanese War.
  5. Barney and Betty Hill,an American couple who were allegedly abducted by extraterrestrials in a rural portion of New Hampshire in 1961, were residents of Portsmouth.
