Abilene State Park Campground

Great park with foot trails easy to navigate. we will be back for sure.

A beautiful little state park that's totally dead in mid-November except for the RV park.

The Good
- good halfway point for our trip to Big Bend, from Denton, TX
- awesome dinner at a must experience Texas Ranch Steakhouse, Perini Ranch, make reservations, it is casual but books up, especially on weekends
- wooded sites, canoes for rent, swimming pool, yurts (!), bird blinds...unfortunately we didn't get one of those sites, arrived too late to canoe, too cold to swim, stayed in our camper, took a hike instead....
- Eagle Trail hike is short and sweet and includes a bison wallow which was cool

The Bad
- we stayed in the Wagon Wheel area which was a little tight, backing into a circle that surrounds the bath house

The Ugly
- bath house was outdated, no showers?!

Overall, a decent State Park, the campground we stayed at would be good for groups or families hanging out together because you are snuggled up. It was convenient to our trip and we had a great outing to Perini Ranch. If I went back I would explore the town of Buffalo Gap.

We camped here in April, 2015 in a 35 foot fifth wheel. The rate shown does not include the daily entry fee to the state park.

We had reservations and check in was quick and easy. The ranger assigned us a site and told us if we saw one we liked better to set up and call her with the new site number. Our site was a large back in surrounded by woods with water and electric hookups, a picnic table and fire pit. There was plenty of space between sites. Although there was a bath house it was quite a long walk from our site and we did not use it.

Although the state park address is Tuscola it is really closer to the historic town of Buffalo Gap. Abilene is a short drive from the park.

We weren't at the park long enough to do much exploring or hiking on the trails. Overall it was a pleasant park that needed a little updating.

This is a small, but lovely state park with spacious campgrounds that are heavily wooded with large live oaks providing a lot of shade at most of the sites. Minimal grade to the sites. Very clean shower facilities. Pretty good place to stay for a few days if you're visiting the area.

The park has short, but scenic hiking/biking trails, access to the nearby reservoir for fishing, and a neat swimming pool / pool house dating to the 1930's. (Day fee required for the pool.) The park brochure listed on-site fishing, however the fishing spot wasn't great - tons of mosquitoes, too many reeds to cast a line, and several snakes at the fishing pier.

Uninterrupted 4G internet connection the whole time.

Camping in September, Abilene State Park is nice and quiet.

Campsite 41, a lone "pull through" in the tent area, Cedar Grove. A tight squeeze between two stands of Mesquite, and the posts bordering the road.

The sites are rocky, but most of the big or jagged edge rocks have been removed (both to be expected in a long established campground in this region of TX).

We arrived late and left early, so little time was spend exploring. But the washrooms were recently cleaned, and the showers appeared in working order.

The only bad was sound. The wastewater treatment plant is next door to this campground, and the pump drones continuously. Ugh!

We stayed here for 5 nights in late March 2018. We were in Wagon Circle site 14. This was the overflow area and it was in a dirt parking lot surrounding the comfort station. The other sites looked pretty nice. Our site was level. We had a choice to back in or drive in but based on the services arrangement we backed in. We had 50 amp and water. Dump station was nearby. Bathroom was old, not too nice. Nice hiking trails. Went over to Abilene Lake (needed a pass code from the office to get in) and walked the trails there as well. We used our $70 Texas Park Pass to avoid the daily use fees of $5/day/person.

There are a variety of amenities at this park, including Lake Abilene, A Great SWIMMING pool and fishing.
There are a wide variety of sites, well space as in many older parks. Bathhouses are clean. Great hiking trails.
This is really a great family park, a nice playground, swimming, hiking and canoes for rent.
About 20 miles of Abilene, but you're not urban. Well forested with many trees and ARMADILLOS galore.
Buffalo Gap is just down the road, a little town with a couple restaurants and now a Dollar store for emergency supplies.
Take bikes, there are plenty of roads to ride on.

Abilene State Park is a beautiful park about 30 minutes outside of Abilene, TX. One of the things we like about this park, is there is a loop where no trailers longer than 25' are allowed.

Another thing we throughly enjoyed about this park was the swimming pool. While Lake Abilene is part of the Texas State Park system, the water level was extremely low, so swimming there wasn't an option. A $2 fee is required for adults to swim in the pool.

The park is well shaded, which is wonderful in those hot summer months. In addition to the campsites, the park has 8 screened shelters. Those do not have AC, but the shade would be much appreciated if you were in a screened shelter.

Since the park is off the beaten path, it is very quiet. People were quiet, and there was no traffic noise.

We have been to Abilene State Park before, and we will definitely go there again.

We stayed one night. Showers were warm but clean. The sight was $18 a night plus $5 per person over 13. Unless you buy a Texas state park pass.
