Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawks Nest State Park encompasses 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River and known for the panoramic views. The New River was designated an American Heritage River on July 30, 1998. There are currently fourteen American Heritage Rivers in the country.
Hawks Nest offers three types of lodge rooms and rates include continental breakfast.
The site of the famouse cliff Lovers’ Leap, this park has a long history of being haunted. Its legend tells of 1800s lovers who leapt off the cliff. Some say the pair were Native Americans, others say they were pioneers. In some tales the girl became dizzy and fell, and her beau leapt after her. Regardless, it has since been a popular suicide spot, and as a result obtained its haunted reputation. Some claim to have seen a glowing white ghost horse; others say you can hear phantom screams and sounds of bodies falling and landing.
Hawk's Nest blew me away, there was endless amounts of natural beauty to the whole area, fun trails to explore filled w/ adventurous surprises, and accommodations that were affordable and scenic. This was my first time to Hawk's Nest and I fell in love w/ it. I'll be heading back again as soon as I need an injection of mountainous nature :)
