“Sipid Food & Sturdy Drink”
We are nineteen souls proudly at your service, with little else to say of ourselves that we may not more rightly show, whenever you should next decide to grace our doorstep.
Don't give up looking because it's hard to find!! I almost did because I liked the live music next door at Wedge Brewery and couldn't figure out where Bull and Beggar was. Don't do that, don't despair. Here are instructions:
Park behind the River Arts District building and go around the left of the building, past the sculptural fence, and down the stairs. Once you're down below by the stage and picnic tables and food truck, keep going back and to the right to the far end of the building. There you will find, discretely tucked away, the Bull and Beggar. Go in, sit down, order a stiff drink, enjoy.
This is run by the guy who originally was the founding chef for the now-famous the Admiral. This place just opened in 2013, however, and is just hard enough to find that tourists rarely make it in.
DRINK-WISE: I am a bourbon fan, so I had that in one of their delicious smashes (ginger beer and some other stuff). It was just what I was hoping for: refreshing and light with a bit of mint. Get it with whatever your favorite alcohol is.
FOOD-WISE: I had the veal brains. Very, very good. Now, obviously only do that if you're ok with the idea, or have had sweat-breads before. It's an unusual texture. They combine these with mozzarella sticks! I love unconventional twist on comfort food!!
The Bull and Beggar—The Admiral's sister restaurant—is a handsome, wood-and-brick bedecked industrial space tucked among the galleries, boutiques and artist workshops that dot the banks of the French Broad River. The menu leans old-school French—dishes could include steak tartare with pommes pont neuf, crepinette of suckling pig—while maintaining a playful streak (veal brains grenobloise might be served with shiso and mozzarella sticks). A pitch-perfect cocktail program and a lengthy raw bar and snacks selection make the bar an unimpeachable choice for late-night noshing or a predinner bite.
