“A living laboratory in Athens!”

The State Botanical Garden of Georgia is a public educational facility operated under the auspices of the University of Georgia. It is a "living laboratory" for university students and faculty who utilize the collections and natural plant communities for studies in a variety of disciplines. The Garden is also a public garden for enjoyment by the general public who find beauty, knowledge and solitude in a garden setting. Founded in 1968, it now encompasses more than 300 acres, much of which borders the Middle Oconee River. Whether you are seeking a natural setting for relaxation or play, learning or exploration, you can find it at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. Enjoy the beauty and serenity and discover vibrant flora while viewing our public gardens, or let the Garden host your special event. As a Public Service and Outreach unit of the University of Georgia, the Botanical Garden provides the public of all ages and UGA faculty and students opportunities for recreation, events, research and learning through its natural areas, display gardens and building spaces.

This place is cool other than the fact that if you wonder off the trail you may run into the toxic waste dump. No, I am not kidding. UGA dumped radioactive crud that is leaking into the Oconee River Basin. Joys of science. Other than that it is great.

A friend and I took a day trip out to the gardens since it’s only a out 2 hours from where we live in Augusta. The gardens are beautiful and have a beautiful range of flowers, edible plants, and forest hikes. There are also lots of beautiful spots to take pictures along your road trip. It was also free to walk around and there is a small restaurant for snacks. Highly recommend this spot!

Relaxing formal and informal gardens-I parked in overflow parking, mostly because I parked under a huge tree on grass. I have a van and there was plenty of room. I walked around the gardens, very nice,, then around the perimeter of the grounds. The paths on the perimeter are more like trails, some next to the river. There were various birds and lots of squirrels. I was only there an hour and a half, but if I go again, I'll give myself three hours. There is a gift shop, but it was closed by the time I walked by it.

I love coming here to run the nature trails or do yoga in the garden. So serene. Only thing that sucks is the fact that dogs aren't allowed and I normally bring the dogs when I go running somewhere! And FREE parking and entrance!

Cool little place to stop and walk around. The garden has free admission so if you enjoy looking at different plants it's worth a stop.
