“A visual symbol of Georgia”
Constructed between 1884 and 1889, this monumental neoclassical structure with its gilded dome is the perfect expression and symbol for the capitol of the ‘New South’ as Atlanta considered itself to be after the Reconstruction. Along with many state capitols, its design and form follow architectural precedents established by the United States Capitol.
