Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park Campground

We ended up in Jacksonville unexpectedly as our dog needed to have emergency gall bladder surgery. The silver lining was that we found this amazing park! It is run by the city of Jacksonville, and was really beautiful with incredibly thick foliage. It felt like we were in a jungle! Pretty amazing considering the close proximity to the city. There are several places in the park where you can access the ocean as well as a lake. Most sites have very good separation from each other, but there are a few where the sites are close to each other. The roads are paved, but the sites are gravel. When we arrived the staff let us drive through the park and pick our site ourselves. We chose site 53 on the E loop. It was a back in site and was very easy to get into and had a lot of privacy. There are also many pull through sites. It can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet and all sites are full hook-up. During the weekend it was a little more crowded, but not full. During the week it was empty and very, very quiet. We liked the park so much we ended up staying 11 days to allow our dog time to recover and revisit the vet before we left town. The camp host said that many times they get people staying there who are receiving treatment at the nearby Mayo clinic. We did not visit the restroom/bath houses. The campground is well maintained, but we did notice poison oak in several places.

What a gem of a city park campground! We needed to be near Jacksonville for some appointments and it was a pretty easy 20-30 min drive downtown from this park.

We walked to the beach or lake (about a half mile walk from our campsite) every day. It was leashed-dog-friendly, and quite empty in February. Even if it was a bit cool out, it was a lovely place to relax. There's parking right at the beach as well, so on the last day we checked out of our site and spent half the day in the parking lot on the beach.

The campground is hit or miss whether sites have much privacy between you and your neighbor or are level, so I'd recommend picking your own site on arrival if they let you. Being deep in the woods under a canopy of mature trees makes up for a lot of that, though. It rained right before we arrived, and there were many low-lying areas that had flooded a bit, but it dried out pretty quickly. The roads are paved but narrow, with tight turns, and many of the sites have mature trees close in, that would make slides tricky. Check your clearances before you put your jacks down!

The sewer hookups were weird, with the pipe being horizontal instead of vertical, doing a 90 degree bend where it came out of the ground. Make sure you have a connector that can attach to that.

There were a lot of ticks in the woods, so we had to check ourselves and pets often. The lake looked nice for kayaking, canoeing, and fishing, but there were signs up about gators so we didn't chance it with paddleboarding. The mountain biking here is supposed to be the best in FL.

The bath houses were a bit dated, but clean and had hot water. Cell service was great on Verizon and ATT, but we heard some say that satellite TV is a challenge in the woods. It's a bit far from a decent grocery store (10-15 min drive to Publix), so stock up before you head into the area if you don't plan on heading out for other reasons. Costco was only about 20 minutes away, and next to a winery - winning combo!

They say no alcohol is allowed, but nobody said anything to us drinking out of beer cans in koozies, and I doubt they would unless you were flaunting it or in a public area. There's also a 2-dog limit we weren't aware of, but the guy at the front desk was super nice and repeated to me "so you have *two* dogs?" after I'd said "three".

There were lots of screened in pavilions for rent that looked like they could hold a lot of people, so this would be a fantastic place for groups and rallies. The playground for the kiddos seemed nice.

We'd like to go back and stay longer next time! It was a perfect place to work and relax, and pretty empty in the winter.

Sweet campground that has you nestled in the dense Florida woods full of oaks with Spanish Moss, palmettos, armadillos and racoons. The beach is a short 5 minute walk and you can access two MTB trails right out of the campground.

Sites are pretty varied, they are all dirt and some are odd fits. Some have dense vegetation some have less. Interior roads are very narrow and can be a bit crowded and twisty. We made it in with our car under tow but would recommend unhooking before you enter the CG.

Access in and out of the park is easy with security manning the main gate at night. There is laundry close by and a great brewery, Green Room, within easy driving distance.

i stayed here twice. When I made my reservation the first time I was able to choose a spot at the end of the line (closest to the water). The site choice made for less traffic (the second time i stayed I was up the middle and it was noisy and annoying) but there is a helicopter flight pattern that was still going at 9pm when I went to bed. Not too loud - the noise from my fan keep it from being annoying. If you can choose to be on the end (toward the pond) do it.

Spots are tight but lots of foliage between most. The lake is beautiful with tons of birds and ducks. Hawks everywhere!

There is a bathroom with showers - it's a little rustic but totally works and is relatively clean.

My cell and Verizon jet pack worked extremely well at my site.

We liked this park so much, we made a detour to stay here again.

The park itself had tons of camping sites, almost 300, but a little greenery separated each campsite, so it didn’t feel like you were on top of people.

Tons of places to ride bikes (about 20 miles of trails, easy to extreme) and streets within the park that were very safe to ride. There is disc golf, though we don't play. Also MILES of beach dedicated to park guests.

For folks who unfortunately might need the services on Mayo Clinic, this park is about a 15 minute drive from the clinic. Very quiet setting (at least on a Tuesday/Wednesday in November. An easy walk to the beach where you can walk in both directions for miles.

Great beach and nice trails. The location is right outside the Navy base and there is a strip club at the entrance to the park. The park does have security and a gate and we felt safe there. Bathrooms were mediocre, a little dirty and old. Laundry was fine though. Sewer hookups and the location made it a great spot for two weeks. Cell service was weak, but the booster made it usable. Pretty short drive to a grocery store and multiple farmers markets throughout the week. The campground is a bike ride or drive from the beach.

I will start off by saying that we LOVED Kathryn Abbey Hanna. The mountain biking is awesome, the hiking trails are beautiful, you have beach access within walking distance and you are within driving distance of restaurants and shopping. It is a busy, lively park with lots of people having a good time. I wouldn't expect it to be quiet on the weekends.

Would we go back? Yes, but with some better planning. Our spot was designated for larger rigs but there was a tree that made access a little tricky. We had to use the neighbors site to get in. Of course, that was after the struggle of getting back to our site with the big rig. Getting out? Even more of a trick. At 38ft it was a tight squeeze. If we go back, we'd opt for a site closer to the front of the park. You can see trees up and down the rows where larger rigs have scraped on them. It's just not a big rig friendly park. Is it doable? Absolutely! You just need to be aware that it's tight and go slow. Unhook up at the front and take your time. For smaller rigs, this park is a dream! Lovely wooded sites, lots of privacy and just overall a GEM!

We have Verizon and AT&T and they were both suitable for remote work. We stayed over a Fri/Sat night so I can't say how the access is over time, but it was suitable for me with constant VPN access and conference calls on Friday afternoon.

As previous reviewers wrote, avoid big rigs. We heard a fifth wheel puncture itself on a tree nearby. This old park was built long before RVs got so big. Many trees have RV scars.
Checkin staff is quite busy and might be stressed. A big smile goes a long way. Family operated, well stocked store, kayak, fishing pole, bike rentals. Clean and warm bathhouse, hot showers, laundry. All sites are FHUs. Stately oaks, tall pines, palmettos, some with storm damage. Long wide beach. Weekends full of families are joyful. Playground, stocked lake, frisbee course. Gate code to enter campground is great for security.

The parks itself was clean but the bathrooms were disgusting... its a shame, the store was great and the beach even better ... if you have an Rv without the need of a shower then you will be fine.Overall experience was very good There was plenty of trails to walk And even fishing Just be prepared not they wanna take a shower there .
