“does vegan upon request”
Turns out I was born with a restaurant inside (it has been suggested that I write about my very first restaurant, which for this purpose will remain nameless, but I do not want to do that because there were only three customers, I was ten, and it was in my bedroom). Eventually though I guess it needed to come out. At least that's what I surmised when an opportunity presented itself to me in the early spring of 1988. Driving by on my way home from the wonderful Rhododendron Cafe where I'd been working and acquiring my culinary chops, I saw a “For Sale” sign in the window of a small, extremely funky, ex drive-up dairy whose most recent incarnation was a Mexican restaurant. Not a right angle in the place! What followed was the birth of my inner restaurant. Moving a notch north to New Mexico and embarking on an adventure with the cuisine of the American Southwest was simply what I thought at the time, a good idea. Twenty one years later and still going strong, perhaps, affirms my original notion. We since have moved to a more spacious (and aligned) building. When asked if I am from the Southwest I gladly admit, “No, I am an imposter!" Truth be told, I grew up in the Hudson River Valley in New York, among a plethora of good food and good cooks.
