“see the fort that served as Maryland's frontier defense during the French & Indian War”

American history from the colonial period to the present can be discovered at Fort Frederick State Park. Our 585 acre park features a unique stone fort that served as Maryland’s frontier defense during the French and Indian War. The Fort's stone wall and two barracks have been restored to their 1758 appearance. Historic exhibits are in the Fort, barracks, CCC Museum and Visitor Center. The park annually holds programs such as artillery firings, junior ranger, colonial children’s day and the 18th Century Market Fair. The park borders the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal passes through the park. The park also features a boat launch, campsites, camp store, fishing, flat water canoeing, a hiking trail, interpretive and educational programs, picnicking, a playground, and a shelter. For more information on facilities, hours, and programs please contact the visitor center.

This is a true gem! We were driving home on Easter Sunday and felt lucky to have found this. The Visitor's center has great artifacts and a 10 minute movie which helps explain the history. The actual fort and barracks were the best rebuild/reenactment of anything period I've ever seen. There were reenactors there also dressed in period clothing who were friendly and knowledgeable and gave great demonstrations. Also, the general area is really beautiful. Just a couple miles off 70 and there is a gas station at the exit too.

Lovely area, great for a picnic, walking some trails, or taking in a bit of history.

We visited the fort, chatted with the historical tour guides, and walked through the barracks and displays inside the fort. The architecture is interesting and the history pretty cool!

Really cool piece of history. We did not have much time to explore because we arrived too late but I can say it would definitely be worth a stop!

The historical actors were very knowledgeable and pointed out some really interesting details. We are into construction and loved seeing the old ways of building.
