Eighty million years ago the Billings metro area was the shore of the Western Interior Seaway, a sea that went from the present-day Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic North. Sediment and sand from the sea were deposited around the shoreline. Over time the sea rose and fell leaving behind a deep layer of sand. Over millions of years this sand was compressed into the sandstone the rims are made of. It is known as Eagle Sandstone. Around a million years ago a much larger river than the current day Yellowstone River, began cutting a canyon into the valley floor of Eagle Sandstone creating what today is known as the Rimrocks.
Easy hike with dogs and kids to cliff area. Plenty of space with views all while keeping families safe.

Stumbled upon this amazing hiking spot coming from Banff Alberta to Toronto Ontario! We needed to stretch our legs and this was amazing. Over looks the city of billings. Giant cliffs and great trails. We did see a BIG cat paw print.. spooked us a bit so just bring some bear spray with you if you're a scaredy cat (no pun intended) like me
Really cool but hard to find. It’s actually called Zimmerman trail. If you put Rimrock into the GPS it takes you to the bottom of the rocks and the trail is at the top.
Stunning in the snow. Go up to Zimmerman Park and catch the view overlooking the city plus the cliffs.
