“Grave of Dorothy Gale”
The Evergreen Memorial Cemetery founded in the early 1820′s, is a historic cemetery nestled in the heart of Bloomington, IL. The 87 acre cemetery begins with a simple entrance, winding avenues, towering trees and an elaborate mausoleum. It is a wonderful example of preservation, culture and tradition in Central Illinois.
The grave of 'Wizard of Oz' famed Dorothy Gage was lost for many years, until Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner discovered it at the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. Wagner had been researching Matilda Joslyn Gage, Dorothy's grandmother, when she stumbled on the tombstone, which was in terrible condition. A new headstone for Dorothy was erected, and On May 31, 1997 that section of the cemetery dedicated as the Dorothy L. Gage Memorial Garden, a place for parents who had lost children to find some comfort.
Beautifully maintained historic cemetery. I visited this to take a break from a long drive home to Ohio. Seeing the gravesite of "Dorothy" as well as Adalai Stevenson was a wonderful experience.
