“celebrating the 'golden spike' point of Interstate 90”
The Minnesota Valley Canning Company was founded in 1903 in Le Sueur, Minnesota. It used the brand name "Le Sueur Z" for canned vegetables starting in 1903; "Le Sueur" by itself was first used in 1933. The brand "Green Giant Great Big Tender Peas" was first used in 1925. The figure of a giant was introduced in 1928. The company was renamed to the Green Giant Company in 1950. The Giant made his first television appearances in 1958, voiced by such actors as Thurl Ravenscroft and (most familiarly) Elmer "Len" Dresslar Jr. Since 1973, he has had a young apprentice, "Sprout," who represents the consumer. In 1979, it merged with the The Pillsbury Company, and in 2001, the group was acquired by General Mills. The 55. 5 foot tall Jolly Green Giant statue built in the seventies to celebrate the 'golden spike' point of Interstate 90.
This was the first stop that we added to our trip out West. Even though it was raining and foggy, it was worth the photo op!! Posted photo on Facebook and got a lot of cute comments! Fun!
If you're on 90 in Minnesota, this is a must do. Seriously, there's nothing else to do and it's so neat!
Funny photo spot! Nice little park with tables for a picnic.
Cool roadside attraction. Good for a 10 min stop to stretch your legs. Just off I90 1/2 mile. Porta John available too.
It was awesome! Fun little random thing to see go get out and stretch your legs on a road trip. Great photo op.
As an American icon, I'll give this 2 stars, but it really is something you can see from the highway in passing.
Cute little stop, friendly little shop. There is an independent cheese curd shop also near the parking lot... He sells a variety of curds (but my husband didn't tell me till after so I didn't get to buy any. Grrr!)
I grew up on the slogan, "Ho ho ho, Green Giant." So for me to see this huge 55.5 foot tall Jolly Green Giant, I was in 80's heaven. It's a really cool icon.
There is a little gift shop, the lady is super nice. Lots of parking and is located in a park setting so you can picnic or let your dogs take a break. It's close to the freeway and how can you not love a place called Blue Earth. Enjoy.
You don't have to be GREEN with envy, you can stop and see this GIANT hit too. It was a good place to stretch our legs with DQ Ice cream next door. But beware...as at other stops around, there are lots of Mosquitos.
Not sure how we couldn't see a 55 foot tall giant, but it took us a few minutes. Nice spot to stretch and walk around
