“built all the way back in 1634”
Castle Island is located in South Boston on the shore of Boston Harbor. It is currently a 22-acre (8.9 ha) recreation site, the location of Fort Independence, and has been the site of a fortification since 1634. It is now connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land, and is thus no longer an island. Castle Island is one of the most popular destinations for Boston residents and visitors alike. It features opportunities for both recreation and historical learning. The island (which is connected to the mainland) is home to Fort Independence, a National Historic Landmark, and Pleasure Bay features a sandy beach and swimming in a calm, enclosed lagoon.
