“kick it in the caves!”
The park offers picnic sites, camping, hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, cave tours, and evening bat flight viewing during the season.Interesting features of the park include 20 known caves, two of which are large enough to be significant. Kickapoo Cavern is approximately 0.25 miles in length (1,400 feet) and boasts some impressive formations. Tours are offered on Saturdays by reservation. Stuart Bat Cave (formally Green Cave), slightly shorter than Kickapoo at 1,068 feet, serves as a migratory stopover for large numbers of Mexican free-tailed bats from mid-March to about the end of October. Bat flights are often spectacular, and public observations are available with an entrance permit. To protect this valuable resource and for your safety, please read and follow all rules and regulations and use caution, as conditions change on a daily basis. Unauthorized entrance into caves is prohibited.Birding opportunities abound in this area. Park facilities include 14 miles of mountain biking trails and 18 miles of undesignated hiking and birding trails.
Do you like primitive style camping and exploring rough lands in the 'middle of nowhere'?
Then you should definitely visit Kickapoo Cavern State Park that is close to the borders with Mexico. Amazing caves await you to discover them, but please be aware that you are at least 23 miles away from civilization and if you like modern life luxuries then you are at the wrong place.
The premises within the Park are pure and primitive, and this is a great opportunity to come as close to nature as it gets. There is no cell phone signal, which i found it a great thing, because that enables you to experience in the best possible way how life is without technology.
I was really impressed with the night sky that was full with bright stars and the huge 1 million bat colony that lives in the caves!
Overall a great place, probably one of the best in Texas, for those who love adventure and primitive circumstances!!
I love this part of Texas. The area was so sparsely populated that I think I could count the cars we saw on my fingers. The park is very remote, but the views are fantastic.
