“hidden rooms inside the bridge!”
**NOTE: this area is not currently open to the public. Inside the anchorage of the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Bridge is a cavernous complex of eight 50-foot tall spaces. These cathedral-like rooms were walled off and used for storage for many years, until 1983, when an arts organization installed an exhibit there as part of the bridge's centennial. Art shows were installed in the space annually until 2001. Photo via http://menschphoto.com/brooklyn-bridge/#
It's kind of insane to think that thousands of people cross the bridge every day not knowing these are down here. It's too bad they're no longer open- although Creative Time displayed art down there between 1983 and 2001, when it was closed for security after 9/11.
