“take in half of the Ventana Wilderness”
The Ventana Double Cone is a prominent twin mountain top located in the northern part of the Ventana Wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest. It is a popular hiking destination. Ventana Double Cone is one of the more remote peaks in the Ventana Wilderness along California's famed Big Sur coast. Though not as high or well-known as Junipero Serra Pk or Cone Pk, access is more difficult with the easiest trailhead 15 miles distance. Of the three, it is the only one that actually lies within the Ventana Wilderness. It sits at the center of the northern part of the Santa Lucia Range, and acts as the triple divide point for the Little Sur, Big Sur, and Carmel River drainages. The views from its summit are outstanding, taking in fully half of the Ventana Wilderness, as far north as the Diablo Range, and even a portion of the Pacific Ocean. Though a trail leads to the summit, it is infrequently climbed, perhaps a few dozen times a year.
The Ventana Double Cone is so close to Bottcher's Gap. While we were travelling southwest we saw that there is a trail leading up to the mountain.
The trail is rocky and has not much of trees around. As it elevates it offers you views on nature and trees. In the beginning there is not much shade in order to get some rest underneath so you have to be patient until you get to the tree area.
During the hiking you can see different trails which lead to the campsite areas and its in your hand to follow them or just continue hiking for fun.
Glorious views from up there but go there prepared with appropriate clothing.
