“known for its clear waters & abundant fish”

Known for its clear waters and abundant fish, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is a popular place among fishermen, boaters and swimmers. During the fall, sportsmen can find waterfowl and upland game within minutes from the park. This 512-acre reservoir is located 27 miles west of Sioux Falls. Three campgrounds with both electrical and non-electrical sites and camping cabins provide plenty of space for overnight visitors. Whether you bring an RV, a tent or prefer the comfort of the indoors, making a reservation is quick and easy. A little time at the computer using the online system and you're good to go. You can hit the beach, rent a canoe or kayak or unpack your fishing gear to haul in a catch of walleye, northern pike, crappie or blue gill. If you choose to stay in a cabin at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area, they are available year-round. Each sleeps four people and is furnished with a set of bunk beds, double bed, table, benches and heating/air conditioning. Lake Vermillion was created by impounding waters from the east fork of the Vermillion River in 1958. The river itself was first noted on an 1801 map by a French trapper who called it Otter Stream. The word vermillion means vivid red color. Some say the stream got its name from the outcropping of red quartzite along its bank. Along with red, you'll find three other R's at Lake Vermillion Recreation Area: rest, relaxation and recreation.

Very quiet campground. Maybe 5 rv's and trailers in the whole place. Nice sized spots big enough for 40 foot motorhomes. Very nice aluminum picnic tables and very nice firepits. On site showers and washrooms. 30amp hook ups only. No sewage or water but has dump station and water fill station. If you are a non resident to south Dakota they do charge a park entrance fee of 6 dollars. 20$ for 1 night stay.

Had the entire campground for ourselves, granted is early April with snow laying around and mid teens overnight. Beautiful campground though with nice manicured landscaping emerging from under the snow and beautiful views of the lake. 20,30 and 50 amp hook ups to compliment the nice level paved sites that fit our 38 footer and truck perfectly. No water hook up at the site though, so be sure to fill up on your way in at the dump station or if this time of year the frost proof hydrant located in the parking lot across the road from the boat ramp. Bonus is we actually heard no trains!

Another well maintained state facility. Our campsite was in the eastern section. The spaces were large and had a lot of space and trees. Nice grass in common area for kid play. Just off the same I-90 exit is the Porter Sculpture Park. A very interesting place to visit.

We spent very little time here, unfortunately, as it was a stopover during a cross country trip. It was really conveniently located near Sioux Falls and interstate 90. We loved that it was a pull up campsite, relatively level and paved, and right on the water. There is not much privacy because there are not many trees between sites. Our other issue was arriving at night... very little to no lighting to show where the East campground locations are. From my conversation with the attendant in advance of booking, I learned that the East side has better water access. The dump area is in another part of the park.

Price reflects final non-resident price with taxes. It was a little funny because I reserved it as a non-resident but we stayed on our way back out of the state after becoming residents. LOL.
We stayed on a Friday night in early May 2018. Campground was full and appropriately noisy for people having fun but being respectable, and it quieted down at the appropriate time. I can imagine some weekends get a little rowdy. Verizon was a little weak but functional (it varied as you walked around). 13E in the West Campground was a good lakefront site with good privacy and space on the driver's side. The site was more than long enough for our 55' combo. We would love to stay here again if we ever find ourselves in the area.

We stayed in November 2018 on a lake front site and even though it snowed that night the restrooms were heated and very clean. The hosts greeted us within minutes of our arrival. We highly recommend this camp ground!

We are SD residents and heard this was a nice spot and it didn’t disappoint. No on site host yet but we met a state worker on the road in and she said just use the outside phone on the entrance booth and call the 800 number for a reservation or book online. We opted to reserve online and it was super easy. Very well maintained, clean, only 10 min off the interstate, and extremely quiet. Granted we were the only ones in the north campground but we heard pheasants, turkeys and coyotes. Flat pull ins, nice picnic tables and fire pit. Showers weren’t yet open in mid April but they looked well kept. Nice play ground, trails and beach at a beautiful little prairie lake.

Excellent lake amenities. Check in was quick and painless and there was enough room to navigate the motor home into the site. Staff keeps the sites and bath houses clean and in good working order. Plenty of shade from mature trees. Be aware this is an electric only park, which most state parks in SD are.

This is a very nice campground. There are campsites on both sides of the lake so be sure to take the Montrose exit and head south on 451st Ave to the check-in area first. This would be the west side of the lake. The dump station is also in this section of the campground. After two previous and awkward dump station experiences, this is a nice one – two stations, with two sewage islands so a total of four rigs could dump if necessary. Potable water station is between the two sewage stations so the water lines can’t get mixed up. Michigan State Parks, let me introduce you to South Dakota State Parks for an example on how dump stations should be set up.
I have only camped on the east side of the lake. The sites are large and meticulously maintained. 30/50 amp electrical hookup at each site, along with a firepit and aluminum picnic table, all in good repair. I did not check out the bathrooms.
As with other SD parks, I think the pull through sites are a poor design. My 32’ Class A could not pull in and get the tow out of the road sufficiently. A smaller rig with a tow might be able to. They work for trailers because they can back up. The sites are really no more than a wide spot on the side of the road.
I get a solid Verizon 4g with 2 bars.
There are currently 15 turkey fledglings hanging out at the very nice, playground area.
I’ve been here twice now and the hosts are present, personable, and very helpful.
