Road Trip Classic

Our Take

The first Wigwam Village was built in 1933 by Frank A. Redford, in Horse Cave, KY. No. 2 opened a few miles away in 1937. No. 1 closed and was demolished in 1982, making No. 2 the oldest Wigwam standing. 15 concrete tee-pees are arranged in a semi-circle with a central tee-pee functioning as the front desk and gift shop. What makes this one extra special is the original furniture and the bathrooms, which are full of zigzag details.

“Built in 1937, when Americans were just beginning to discover the joys and excitement of automobile vacations, Historic Wigwam Village No. 2”

Its gas station and lunch counter became a popular stop on long trips north and south. The lunch counter and gas station closed in the 1970s, but the 15-wigwam motel remains an enduring testament to an earlier time — but with all of the modern conveniences you would expect and want, including private bathrooms, air conditioning, coffee pots and free WiFi and cable television.

Such a fun place, I was there this past weekend. I saw many complaints online about the upkeep, but I definitely saw other motels in town that I definitely wouldn't have stayed in. It's not a luxury place, but if that's what you're looking for, you're in the wrong city. It's a neat place, has historical value, and very memorable. The owners were very nice. I'm definitely going to be back.

Just spent the night there. Nice property. Very hospitable owners. Yes, it's an older establishment so go expecting that. However, our wigwam was clean. You could smell the clean. Air-conditioner worked well. Beds are full size but that worked fine for our family of 4. Fun place to stay for a night or 2 if you are doing something in the area.

The only complaint I have with the Wigwam Village is that our room had a very distinctive smell. Once we had air fresheners, we were definitely more comfortable. So if you're planning on staying here, come prepared!

Stayed here on a recent trip through Cave City. Dated but cool concept. It could use some work but the rooms were clean and comfortable. Good value for the money. This is sure to curry favor with the traveler looking for something unique.

Awesome but don’t expect a 5 star stay. That’s not what makes it an wonderful experience.

Great photo op, even if you aren't staying the night. The wigwams were bigger than I thought they would be! Also, gas is freaking cheap around here. I can probably count the number of times I can remember seeing gas under $2 a gallon on one hand, and one of those times was in Cave City earlier today.

This has been on my bucket list and surely did not disappoint! A wonderful piece of Americana. The owner was very pleasant and accommodating. Our teepee had everything you need: comfy bed, plenty of hot water and a heater to keep us toasty in cold February weather. An absolute must for anyone wanting a truly unique overnight stay!

Is this the Ritz, nope. Is it awesome americana? You bet! My kids loved it. I saw all the bad reviews too. Yes the rooms are smaller, you're in a concrete tipi!! We got about 2 channels of tv and we used our own bedding! But it was decent clean, they were super friendly, Cave city is a small hurting tourist trap but we had a blast! an absolute blast! Did I have to get up every couple hours and move the space heater around? sure? but I woke up to a think pine sent outside each morning, there is room to bring your own camp stove, the very simple playground entertained all 3 kids from 5-10 years old. Was worth the stop for us! so much fun!!
