“just 'appeared' one April Fool's Day”
Foamhenge "appeared" on April Fool's Day 2004 after being assembled in place the day before on the property of Natural Bridge and yes it's all foam. It's popularity has exceeded my expectations having appeared on MSNBC, Fox, Discovery Channel, CNN, BBC, Smithsonian, Food Network, TBS and a Geico commercial segment. It's also been in National Geographic for Kids, Washington Post, U.S.A. Today, Wall Street Journal, international magazines, and in several books, and on the cover of "Strange But True VA".I've been present during the Summer Solstice and the sunrise there is only about 5 feet off. Don't worry I figure it should work itself out in about 4000 years.
10.01.2016 no longer there.
It moved to Centerville, VA.
This was really a highlight for our trip! We we're running a Habitat for Humanity Mission with Bnei Akiva, and took a great group picture by Foamhenge.
Just know: You'll need to park on the shoulder of the state road, cross carefully, and go around a locked fence to walk up the hill to the model (there's no real 'parking lot', you just sorta stop and go up). Nearest bathrooms are located at a welcome center .2 miles from the site.
Enjoy!
Still there on 8/25/16. Best to put in 5856 South Lee Highway, Natural Bridge, VA (Make sure it's south lee hwy). Park your car next to the green fence and walk straight and then up the hill on the left. If your kids play Pokemon Go, they can help you navigate to it, as the sign and the "foamhenge" are both PokeStops (that's how we found it). In reading up on it, it may not be there for long, but was very short drive off of I-81, so not so far out of the way. Well worth it!
No longer at this location. Went to checkout the fun looking site and sadly the foam pieces were gone. Got a fun picture standing in place of where the foam once stood but not what we expected!
1/1/17
10/22/16 sadly foamhenge is no more. You can see the base where it used to be anchored, but alas that is it😞
The exact address is 5856 S. Lee Highway
Hard to find but worth the stop
Foamhenge still exists! White fence, beat up gate, dirt path up the hill. Great way to stretch the legs.
Hard to find! It's about a mile or so south past the highway exit, on route 11, just past natural bridge zoo. White fence with a gate to hop over. Super worth it and a bonus cool sculpture of king Arthur's Merlin.
