“commemorating the 1803-1806 expedition of Lewis& Clark”
The center commemorates the Lewis & Clark 1803-1806 expedition as they voyaged through South Dakota. It features interpretive panels and murals reconstructing the expedition journey. Take the scenic walk and view the Missouri River and the community of Chamberlain and Oacoma from a replica keelboat.
Visitors should note that the Roadtrippers map pin on Main Street is NOT the correct location (it's the Chamber of Commerce). Do NOT take exit 263 into Chamberlain. This interpretive center is adjoined to a rest stop between exits 263 and 265 just east of Chamberlain on the south side of I-90. There is no actual exit number and no signage for the center, just a rest stop sign, which is really a shame because it looks like a great place to stop.
We planned to stop here and learn a little about Lewis and Clark's expedition while letting our kids stretch their legs, but the center is closed for the winter and reopens in May. What we could see through the gate looked very nicely done though, so I'm sorry we missed it.
This is a really nice interpretive center it’s small but has a nice exhibit of the Lewis and Clark expedition suitable for kids I really liked the Dignity statue. It was gifted to the park in honor of 125th anniversary of South Dakota statehood. Its a beautiful large statue of a woman holding a quilt made out of 100 blue diamond shapes that “move in the wind like Aspen leaf.” This is a really nice place for a picnic.
