“Immersing audience in diverse culture”
Carolina Actors Studio Theatre immerses audiences in culturally diverse and creative theatre experiences that celebrate, challenge and reflect the contemporary world. We are a nonprofit performing arts organization that extends the boundaries of stage and set into the lobby and beyond. Our productions take audiences on a journey, provoking thoughts and asking questions along the way. CAST has enjoyed a long and colorful history in Charlotte, founded in 1992 by playwright, director and acting instructor Ed Gilweit. In 1996 CAST partnered with Michael Simmons. Ed passed away in 2002, but his love of theatre lives on in CAST. After Ed’s passing, CAST relocated to Charlotte’s Plaza-Midwood neighborhood. In 2006, with support from a dynamic board of directors from Charlotte’s creative community, CAST received 501(c)(3) designation, emerging as one of the region’s most exciting nonprofit arts organizations. In addition to receiving every significant regional theatre accolade, CAST has been lauded for ambitious productions requiring large-scale installations like a revolving stage and a 3,000-gallon tank of water. In 2011 CAST moved to its present home in NoDa, Charlotte’s arts district. Today, CAST continues to present notable and challenging works including regional premieres and Pulitzer Prize-winning plays. The actors, directors and staff who produce works at CAST are regularly honored for their technical and creative accomplishments.
