“Also known as Jimmy's”
Woodlawn Tap (or Jimmy's as it's fondly called by regulars, a nod to longtime owner Jimmy Wilson, who died in 1999) is a scruffy place, and has been since it opened in the 1950s. It attracts a diverse clientele -- artists, business people, students from the University of Chicago, construction workers, booksellers and Nobel Prize winners. As the closest bar within walking distance of the university, Woodlawn attracts a large student crowd during the academic year. The menu features cheap hamburgers, barbecue beef and Reuben sandwiches.
