“Rockin' the sauce since 1951”
The Montgomery Inn Boathouse has an energy all its own. Maybe it’s the striking view of the Ohio River. Maybe it’s the upstairs sports lounge. Maybe it’s the amazing food and incomparable service. Whatever it is, there’s definitely a vibe and it’s contagious (in a good way, of course). The Boathouse is conveniently located close to downtown shopping, entertainment and nightlife. And when the weather’s nice, the outdoor seating area makes it feel like you’re on vacation. So get away from it all at the Boathouse. No travel agent required.
Montgomery Inn is a Cincinnati staple, and the boathouse is a perfectly fine place to get it.
We had fun at the Boathouse, but the experience wasn't absolutely amazing, and this won't be one of our favorite restaurants. The highlight of the meal were the BBQ Pulled Pork Nachos on Montgomery Inn's chips, which is a fabulously decadent idea.
With Cincinnati's restaurant scene booming, I think the Boathouse is going to need to get out of their comfort zone and step up a notch. The atmosphere is a little out-dated, and the service had a little of the "good ol-boy" feel (and we were definitely not the regulars!).
This is still a great place to bring meat-loving, out-of-town business associates or hold an extended family gathering. But the reason is because it's a "safe" choice, not because it's the best thing ever.
famous cincinnati ribs and sauce... the saratoga chips are damn good too!
While I gather this was once a great place, sadly, there is quite a long list of things that make this place sub par today.
Firstly, on the plus side, they have a bunch of interesting sports memorabilia dotted around, and some really cool booth areas.
The outdoor deck also has a great river view.
Unfortunately you aren't allowed to eat dinner on that deck - only drinks and appetizers. This is despite the fact you can have a full dinner 2 ft away on the other side of a glass wall that takes you inside.
We started our night on the deck, and when it came time to eat, moved inside, at the recommendation of both the front of house girl, our previous waitress, AND another waitress that was buzzing around.
Side note: there are millions of staff in this place, all of whine (I spoke to 10+) look completely baffled at any question you have for them.
Anyway, after sitting inside, having previously waited an hour for a starter on the deck, we were informed after a 20 minute wait to even speak to someone (and it wasn't busy) that it was too late to get food, so we would have to move downstairs.
Ok, location 3, maybe we can get some food here... And we could! Sadly the food was pretty average. If you have low standards for what makes something average. The bread they bought out to start was literally basic, semi-stale Kroger bread. The ribs were ok. The crap French fries were dripping in powdered salt and there was literally 13 of them. My dessert, a strawberry shortcake ice cream thing, was the worst short bread I've ever eaten (I'm British, we have a lot of short bread). The Irish coffee had canned whip cream on it, and the wine all sucked - and we ordered 3 bottles of the best things we could find on a menu list we were pretty familiar with.
Anyway, service is a 2 (made worse by the amount of people there are), food is a 1, but environment is pretty good, a 4.
They have some work to do to get relevant again I think.
Rumor has it that the Boathouse is trying to get a co-working space going. This is an interesting option if you're a wifi hobo looking for a place to work, what with BBQ and booze at the ready.
I like the view here better than at the original location. And they have a room dedicated to Bob Hope, with whom I am obsessed. Good, quick service, beer, free popcorn while you wait for your table. The ribs are stupid good. And the Saratoga chips dipped in sauce.
