“a beach incomparable in beauty”

Shi shi Beach was one of the last additions to Olympic National Park in 1976. It's located just west of Neah Bay. It is known by hikers as one of the most beautiful beaches and revered by all who visit. Also, a popular camp ground for visitors as well. Ecosystem type: Coastal Forest and Ocean Beach  Trail tread types: Well-maintained boardwalk, muddy road bed, sandy beach General elevation trend: Flat River crossings: Petroleum Creek may be difficult to cross in winter during heavy rains. Unique features: Wilderness coast, bald eagle viewing, tidepools. Level of difficulty: Easy Distance: 2.0 to 4.5 miles Elevation change: 200 ft. to sea level Best Season: April through October Pets, use of weapons, and wheeled devices are prohibited on coastal beaches and trails. A Makah Recreation Pass must be purchased in Neah Bay prior to arriving at any trailheads on the Makah Indian Reservation. Overnight parking for Shi Shi is permitted only at designated private parking lots. Utilize existing fire rings or build campfires on the beach to prevent damage to tree roots. Use driftwood only. Expect large crowds at Shi Shi Beach during summer months. There has been as many as 50 to 250 campers along Shi Shi Beach on busy weekends.

My boyfriend and I just visited this beach a couple of weeks ago. The first part of the trail is nice and relatively flat, and then you hit mud. LOTS of mud. So make sure and wear shoes that you can hose off or pressure wash. There were areas of mud that were darn near a foot deep. But once you get to the beach, the views are stunning. The waves were crashing and we climbed up on to one of the rocks and ate our lunch. Tons of tidepools and exploring to do as well. Was an excellent excuse to get some really good photographs! Definitely a must for any beginner hiker!
