“Don't like shacks? Don't book it!”
Blues lovers making the pilgrimage to the cradle of the blues, the Mississippi Delta, should not miss the unique opportunity to experience Hopson Plantation, located only three miles from the legendary Crossroads, Highways 49 and 61, in Clarksdale. Immerse yourself in the living history you will find at Hopson. Virtually unchanged from when it was a working plantation, you will find authentic sharecropper shacks, the original cotton gin and seed houses and other outbuildings. You will glimpse plantation life, as it existed only a few short years ago. In addition, you will find one of the first mechanized cotton pickers, manufactured by International Harvester, as you stroll around the compound. Whether you're looking for an overnight stay on your way to Memphis or Chicago or New Orleans, or you need to stay longer to conduct historic blues business, (and/or monkey business), the Shack Up Inn will add a new dimension to your stay in the Delta. As you sit in a rocker on the porch, tipping a cold one while the sun sinks slowly to the horizon, you just might hear Pinetop Perkins radiatin' the 88's over at his shack. Perhaps, if you close your eyes even Muddy or Robert or Charlie might stop to strum a few chords in the night.
Unique, quaint, no frills. Looking for luxury this is not your spot. Worried about perfectly clean, keep driving. Want something fun and different? Bingo.
Keep in mind that this isn't a boring old hotel. The rooms are loaded with character (even if they're not perfectly just so), and I absolutely love that they've got an on site blues joint. Definitely worth a stay!
A interesting place to stop and look at. I found the story to be very interesting. Keep an open mind.
