“A route 66 institution, est. 1968”

The Oklahoma Route 66 Museum is operated by The Oklahoma Historical Society, a state agency. The museum was originally opened to the public in 1968 as the Museum of the Western Trails, operated by the Oklahoma Industrial Trust and Recreation Department (which later became the Oklahoma Department of Tourism and Recreation). In 1991 the museum was transferred to OHS. In 1993 plans began for a redevelopment of the museum in order to focus on transportation and Route 66. The project was funded with federal, state and private funds, with the citizens of Clinton (population approximately 10,000) raising over $200,000.00.

A step back in time to look at the history of Route 66 and how it changed America. Great walk-through museum for all ages. Museum does have a fee,$5 adult and less for students and seniors. Gift shop has unique souvenirs and shirts that are reasonably priced. This is a definite stop for Route 66 enthusiasts!

This was AMAZING!!! The displays are so well done - interactive and educational. I live in Flagstaff, AZ, but never really understood the story of Route 66 before visiting this museum. My 6-yr-old grasped it too - telling me at the end of our visit, while looking at a picture of an abandoned stretch of Route 66, "My heart hurts for the road." ❤️ We left with a new appreciation for it and the stories of the people/places that made Route 66 the legend it is today! Perfect stop!!!
