“5 generations of authentic German food”
Over 125 years of the finest hospitality in German Village. Home of the world famous Cream Puff and the official food of Columbus, the Bahama Mama.
Schmidt’s Restaurant and Banquet Haus is the culmination of five generations of the Schmidt family working to bring real German food and authentic German hospitality to the community. Known for their decadent Jumbo Cream Puffs and signature Bahama Mamas, Schmidt’s has been a staple in German Village for more than 120 years.
Schmidt’s, a nationally registered historic site tucked away in German Village, is located in a historic brick livery stable at 240 E. Kossuth St. and Purdy Alley. Upon entering the restaurant, you quickly realize the atmosphere is second-to-none. With a beautiful banquet haus upstairs and live German music throughout the week, Schmidt’s takes the German experience beyond their one-of-a-kind menu items and transports you to your own piece of Germany, right in the heart of Ohio.
My girlfriend introduced me to this place a few years ago, and I've been dreaming about their cream puffs ever since.
Pretty good. Schnitzel tasted freshly prepared. Nice "autobahn" buffet with ample wurst variety. Chocolate cream puff was big-not great though. A cold sauerkraut slaw on buffet rocked and made up for the bland German potato salad.
We decided to stop thanks to the roadtrippers reviews. The food was above average and authentic German (at least from what I can remember of my trip to Bavaria). The portions were huge and the location is neat. Inside, it's not fancy, but the delicious looking cream puffs were well displayed.
Everything about this place was great. The food and service made our stop memorable. Thanks to Roadtrippers App we were able to find this place as we traveled through the area.
I am particular about my wiener schnitzel, and Schmidt's has the best. Yes, it's an institution in Columbus, but they don't rest on their laurels. This has the most extensive menu of German food around. Save room for dessert. They are not kidding about the cream puffs. I love apple struddle, and their's is so delicious! If you're passing through Columbus and are crazy about German food, Schmidt's is a must.
Plan ahead for a 15-45 minute dinner wait but for a $15 adult German buffet it was well worth it. I know most people say the Bahama Mama was the best but I loved the garlic sausage. I also know people rave about the cream puff and it was good but I'd never go out of my way for it. The service is fast and friendly once you're seated. My German side loved this stop!
Maybe not worth the wait time if your hungry. Either bring snacks or go with a take out order. It only took 15 minutes for the whole order and the waitstaff/host was really helpful and polite!! The take out orders seems to be maybe smaller, but man just as good. Definitely spring for the cream puffs, but make sure you have someone to share with because they really are the size of the take out box. Don't think the sampler size is big enough for two people because it's not. But the apple sauce is probably the best I've ever had. Totally worth a stop
Ah, Schmidty's. Most famous for the Autobahn, which is a massive buffet of sausages, and their cream puffs, which are literally as big as your head. Good place for a family or group meal, I think.
Great food , wonderful atmosphere and reasonable prices. Definitely worth a try.
Schmidt's has good German food, which is great if you like German food. If you're like me and you aren't a huge fan of German food there's not much here for you. Better stick with a cream puff for dinner.
