Explore Coronado's fascinating past at the museum, with galleries showcasing Coronado's early development including the history of the Hotel del Coronado and Tent City and the role of the military. Now showing special exhibit gallery is Coronado on the Frontline: 1942-1945, a look at the community's response to World War II. "Home of a Naval Aviator" signs celebrate 100 years of naval aviation in Coronado. he history of this unique community is what led a group of concerned citizens to establish the Coronado Historical Association in 1969.Through exhibitions at a local bank, lectures, and Christmas Home Tours, the Association grew in membership, collections, and prestige.In 1987, the Board of Directors approved the purchase of 1126 Loma Avenue to house the first-ever permanent home of the Archives and to establish a Museum.After 12 years of collecting and preserving Coronado's history, the Association's collection outgrew the historic home on Loma Avenue. In 1999, the Board approved a relocation proposal to the historic Bank of Commerce building at 1100 Orange Avenue. This move resulted in the creation of the Museum of History and Art. The Museum opened to the public in October 2000.
