Well known as an oasis of natural Florida habitats for wildlife; especially birds. Natural salt marshes; hardwood swamps; extensive pine forests and freshwater pools provide a haven for wildlife and people. Fishing; hiking; bird watching; wildlife observation and viewing the historic St. Marks lighthouse draw visitors from around the world. The refuge visitor center has exhibits; a gift shop and restrooms and is a great place to start your visit. Of special interest is the fall migration of the monarch butterflies and the winter migration of the whooping cranes.

What an amazing experience! This is a self-guided tour along Lighthouse Rd, a 6.7 mile paved roadway. There are 8 stop-offs & 2 viewing areas designated along the tour, although you may pull over at ANY time to view the myriad of native plants, birds & wildlife.
We saw butterflies galore & many birds including Roseate spoonbills, Tri-colored herons, Great Blue herons, Great egrets and Snowy egrets.
The lighthouse is the bonus at the end of the road, & you can walk the property including the shoreline.

Hike, wander and discover beautiful salt marshes, tidal flats, and fresh pools during your visit. Make sure to take time to visit the St. Marks Lighthouse! We think a visit here is one of the best things to do in Tallahassee.
